Steampunk Explorers & Adventurers
The most compelling Steampunk character style that evokes the spirit of ‘the time that never was’ is without doubt the Steampunk Adventurer and Explorer. An impression and style (Steamsona) that works for men and women alike, this enduring look never goes out of fashion in the Steampunk World.
Characterised by their practical, outdoor clothing built for rugged adventure, Steampunk Adventurers and Explorers can cross any terrain in comfort and style. The long duster coats, sturdy boots, goggles and leather jackets provide protection, while wide brimmed hats are vital to keep the elements at bay as well as completing the look with panache. Strong equipment belts, pouches and bags, made of leather and canvas, carry every accoutrement and accessory the Steampunk time-travelling adventurer needs to surmount any obstacle encountered. Of course, no Steampunk Explorer can leave home without a pocket watch, compass, and very likely, a hip flask filled with a drop of a favourite tipple.
Historical note: blue tinted lenses in goggles and sunglasses not only look cool but are also authentically Victorian. In 1854 the Englishman Robert Hunt discovered that a beam of light passing through a blue lens could magnetise the needle of a compass. No other lens colour can do this. In 1871 the American General, AJ Pleasanton showed that sunlight passing through dark blue glass stimulates plant and animal growth. The Victorians concluded that eyeglasses with blue lenses were good for the eyes. For the Steampunk Explorer-Adventurer, the ability to magnetise a compass needle and preserve good eye health is a vital attribute. So if you want your Steampunk to be authentic, scientific and cool, Steampunk goggles and glasses with blue lenses are the way to go.
